With heavy hearts, the community of Scarsdale and the broader New York City education circle mourns the passing of Julia Queck Sherman, a passionate and dedicated Special Education Teacher, who passed away recently in Scarsdale, New York.
Julia’s life was one of deep service, compassion, and commitment to education. She was recently appointed in the tenure area of General Special Education within the Scarsdale Public Schools, beginning her probationary period on August 28, 2024, with a term that was meant to span three years. In her short time with Scarsdale Public Schools, Julia had already begun making a meaningful impact in the lives of her students and colleagues.
Prior to her return to New York, Julia spent over nine years teaching in California with PVPUSD, and previously served in the NYC Department of Education, where she taught kindergarten and 2nd grade integrated co-teaching special education classrooms. Her dedication to inclusive learning, her students’ well-being, and her belief in every child’s potential made her a remarkable force in every classroom she entered.
Julia held a Master’s degree in Elementary and Special Education from New York University, and a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and History from the University of Michigan. She also studied abroad at the University of St Andrews. Julia was widely respected for her academic dedication, her strong credentials, and her genuine love for children. Her certifications in Early Childhood Education, Childhood Education Grades 1-6, Special Education Grades 1-, and Literacy Birth-2 were a testament to her drive to support students in diverse learning settings.
Julia was also known for her time as an AmeriCorps*VISTA Volunteer Coordinator at the Met Council, where she extended her heart beyond classrooms, working with nonprofit organizations to uplift communities.
Friends and colleagues remember Julia not only for her excellence in education but also for her vibrant spirit, kind heart, and sense of humor. She had an infectious love for learning and inspired both students and fellow educators to strive for more.
