A fatal accident in Key Largo on Sunday evening has left the community in shock after a man riding an electric scooter was killed in a collision with a pickup truck. The incident occurred just before 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 1 and Bay Drive near Mile Marker 99, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).
Authorities confirmed Monday that the man was riding northbound on the southbound sidewalk of U.S. 1 when he collided with the right side of a black Chevrolet pickup truck. The truck was making a right turn from Bay Drive onto the highway when the crash happened.
Emergency responders rushed the scooter rider to Baptist Health Mariner’s Hospital in Tavernier. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. As of now, officials have not released the victim’s name or age.
The area was heavily congested following the crash as bystanders attempted to assist before police and medics arrived on the scene. A witness who had just left Snook’s Bayside Restaurant around 6:15 p.m. shared a post on social media describing the chaos and concern at the scene.
“Hey guys, yesterday around 6:15pm I was leaving Snook’s Bayshore Restaurant and saw a bad accident with a motorcycle or bike under a lifted truck with a person under it. Was wondering if the person was okay. A lot of traffic was held while people were stopping to go assist till cops arrived. It was like by the Wendy’s on the southbound side like MM98-99,” the post read.
Local law enforcement has not announced whether any charges will be filed in connection to the crash, and investigations remain ongoing.
This tragic accident serves as a somber reminder of the risks posed on busy roadways, especially in popular travel corridors like the Florida Keys.
